A visit from Alan Joshua's Dr. Slezak...

10/29/2014

PictureDue out in November!
Villain month is drawing to a close on my blog. For my final interview, I have invited Dr. Karlik Slezak, the villain of Alan Joshua’s novel, The SHIVA Syndrome is my guest.

So tell us, Dr. Slezak…

What is the SHIVA project’s ultimate goal?

Slezak, a distinguished, well-dressed man in his 60s, takes Audra’s hand, then holds it gently between his in a prolonged handshake. He smiles warmly, pausing as his blue eyes hypnotically focus on hers.

“Before answering, my dear, allow me to say how charming you look. He gently touches her shoulder; Audra cringes. “Your hair is quite lovely in this light.”

“And your smile, it’s absolutely fetching.”

He smiles, his eyes carefully scrutinize his impact on her,

“Oh, yes. You were asking something, something about goals, is that right?”

He drops his eyes in thought, then looks up again.

“Our goal? The advancement of science. We serve humanity and protect our great nation. Safeguarding our nation’s security—you, your lovely family, those things we hold so dear in these troubled times-- is of the utmost importance to us. It’s the guiding principle in my life’s work.”

But you really haven’t answered my question, sir. How can SHIVA accomplish that? What, exactly, is the nature of your research?

Slezak squeezes her arm warmly, nods, and starts to walk off.

“Security issues prohibit disclosure. National security, you understand. I believe I have answered as best I can, my dear. Now, I hope you’ll pardon me. I have pressing matters requiring my attention. It was delightful spending a few minutes with you.”

Dr. Slezak, could I impose on you for only a few more minutes?

Annoyed, he returns, but his smile has clearly faded.

“Please make this brief.”

What makes you so driven to accomplish SHIVA’s goals, whatever they may be?

He huffs and folds his arms.

“Driven? I’m unhappy with your choice of words. Do I seem frenetic? Consider me as motivated—highly motivated. Now, if that is all…”

Two more questions, sir. If you could choose anyone, real or literary, as a “partner in crime,” so to speak, who would you choose and why?

Slezak’s eyes widen in astonishment. “Crime? That’s another poor choice of words.”

He looks at Audra, resentfully.

Audra blushes. I meant that only in a figurative sense, sir--humorously.

“Clearly, you have no idea of who I am or the importance of my position. My work is in national security. I’m a respected government official, not a crook!”

Sorry to offend, sir. All right then, who would you choose as someone who could work effectively with you, who shares similar values?

“Politically, one man stands out: Richard Nixon, a steadfast patriot and unflagging seeker of peace. I worked for his election and reelection. He was terribly misunderstood and mistreated by the media.”

Audra is tempted to pursue this but, wisely, decides to move on.

Please describe yourself using only three words, Dr. Slezak.

“This is the final question, young woman. I won’t squander any more time on this, this…nonsense.”

Agreed, Dr. Slezak. Thank you for your understanding.

He rubs his chin as he thinks.

“Honesty. Yes honesty, patience, and frankness. And that, I’m afraid, is all I can give you, Ms. Middleton. For further questions, contact Dr. Burton Grimes, my associate at SHIVA.”

He walks away briskly.

Overhearing the interview, Lincoln Carter, the research team’s medical officer looked towards Audra with a sour expression. He tightens his lips and shakes his head.

“You should know, Ms. Middleton, Grimes is Slezak’s lackey. You’ll do no better with him. They’re both bottom-feeders. Slezak didn’t show it, but your questions enraged him. I’d watch my professional back,” he warned. “You’re on his list. He’ll never forget this. Never does. I’d be on the lookout for an IRS audit.”

Sounds unpleasant. I’ll sleep with the lights on from here on out, believe me. Here’s more about Dr. Slezak and The SHIVA Syndrome, a psychological suspense novel:

A secret Russian mind research laboratory in Podol’sk erupts, annihilating thousands and leaving a monstrous, one-mile deep crater in its wake.

Beau Walker, parapsychologist and reluctant empath, is coerced into joining a research team, code-named SHIVA, to investigate the enigmatic event. Walker must fight his way past political and military deceptions and a host of deadly adversaries to unlock the riddle of the SHIVA syndrome.

Will he have the physical, emotional, and spiritual strength to defy the dangers he faces…or will they destroy him before he can come to a new, challenging understanding of the nature of reality?

The SHIVA Syndrome offers a dizzying ride into human abilities far beyond the known.

Prepare to alter your reality.

A visit from Elizabeth Fountain's Sergio...

Prepare for goose-pimples! It's villain visitation month here on my blog. We’re down to the final two antagonists! Today Sergio Leone Eastwood, the villain of Elizabeth Fountain’s novel, An Alien’s Guide to World Domination, is my guest.

Tell us, Sergio…

What is your ultimate goal?

Ah. That is a thoughtful question that requires an equally thoughtful answer, one that takes into account the various synergies and convergences that have bedeviled my otherwise stellar career as an interplanetary mercenary. Some would claim my ultimate goal is to avoid decimation at the hands (if he has any) of the Lord of the planet Kleptofargh to whom I still owe the largest cyborg army in the galaxy, to stay alive another day. Others might insist I aim to take over the galaxy myself, one fine day. But if I were to tell the truth, my ultimate goal would surely involve eliminating that pesky witness who claims she has seen me kill my own father. Of course, she is entirely mistaken; yet her wild assertions might interfere with the business deals that keep me alive.

What makes you so driven to accomplish this goal?

Even an interplanetary mercenary has a reputation to uphold. My business partners do not care a whit that I might have murdered my own father. They certainly would concern themselves with my utter failure to carry out my real mission that night, and my ties to the forces on my home planet who recruited me to kill for them. Such knowledge would surely cut well into my ability to make a profit, if not cost me my own life.

If you could choose anyone from the literary world as your partner in crime, who would you choose and why?

As a fan of the film and literary arts on your little planet Earth, I am well informed to answer this question. Upon significant reflection, I must request Professor Moriarty, the archenemy of Mister Sherlock Holmes. The esteemed Professor’s intelligence might nearly match my own, and his ability to disappear rapidly, leaving those behind him wondering if he ever existed, suits my modus operandi to a T.

If Professor Moriarty is unavoidably detained from such a partnership, given my choice of Earth name, I would not be able to decline an offer of assistance from Angel Eyes, also known as Mister Lee Van Cleef. A brutal assistant might come in quite handy…

Describe yourself in three words or less.

Pardon me? It is not in my nature to economize with words. However, since you’ve been so gracious in this interview, I will do my best to narrow my response to three words. In order to do so, let us stipulate that handsome, brave, and intelligent go without saying, so to speak. Ergo, three additional words to describe me might include: devious, duplicitous, and treacherous.

I appreciate your attempt at brevity, Mr. Eastwood. Here’s a bit more about this lovely work of science fiction with a sense of humor:

Louise Armstrong Holliday is the last person on Earth you’d expect to save the human race. But when she uncovers proof that her boss is an alien the color of lime Jell-O gone horribly wrong, and is at the center of a plot to destroy humanity, Louie decides to do exactly that. She begins a journey from her company’s suburban Seattle office park to the old cities and castles of Eastern Europe. Along the way, Louie is attacked by flying books, overly-sensitive bat-crow monsters, and her own self-doubts. She must learn the truth about her closest friend, stand up to her boss, confront her oldest enemy, and make peace with her Aunt Emma, who annoys her in the way only true family can. She also has to rely on Buddy, the little blind mini-Schnauzer who saves her life twice—and really is from Mars.

A visit from Helen Henderson's Lady Broch...

Plan your escape route! It’s villain month here on my blog. I’ll be interviewing two antagonists each week. Today Lady Broch of Ky'Port, the villain of Helen Henderson’s novel, Dragon Destiny is my guest.

Tell us, Lady Broch...

What is your ultimate goal?
To wed Lord Branin Llewlyn of Cloud Eyrie and have him on his knees before me.

What makes you so driven to accomplish this goal?
As the daughter of a holder, I am used to wealth, power, and if not respect, at least obedience from others. I lost all that when my husband, Hicca, was passed over as leader of his clan and hold. Now I sit huddled in a cold cave. Instead of servants, a measly handful of raiders are at my beck and call. I want what I had before, the starlton gowns, warm bed, and enough coins to buy whatever or whoever I want. The dragshi have the money and the power. And I will get them--by any means necessary. As to why I selected his mightiness Branin Llewlyn to help accomplish my goal. He spurned the offer of my bed. Now he will pay. No one rejects me.

If you could choose anyone from the literary world as your partner in crime, who would you choose and why?
Barbara Hambly. She is knowledgeable in the ways of magic and travelling between worlds. Both items that I can use to confuse my enemies, enrich my fortunes and get my revenge on the dragshi.

Describe yourself in three words or less.
Regal, distinguished, magnanimous

Here's more about Lady Broch and the fantasy novel, Dragon Destiny, Book One of the Dragshi Chronicles:
The awakening of his dragon soul twin, Llewlyn, brought Dragshi Lord Branin near-eternal life, but not happiness. As a dragshi, he can take on dragon form and know the freedom of flight, however, both are the last of their kind and have waited millennia for their mates. The firebrand raider, Lady Broch is more than willing to fulfill that position -- with or without Branin's willing cooperation.

When a faint thought impinged on Branin's mind, hope for an ending to eons of loneliness soared. Plagued by doubts because no signs of a dragon shifter's birth have been seen, Branin searches the world for the mysterious girl he only knows by the name, Anastasia. All that stands between happiness and a lifetime alone is destiny—and Broch.

A visit from Susan Stec's Granny... with GIVEAWAY!

Toni's grandmother is a psychopath.
Her sister is a ghost.
Her boyfriend is possessed.
And she has no idea who she is.

Summer vacation is ruined when Toni's twin sister, Sara, dies. Instead of walking into the light, Sara stomps directly away from it, totally pissed she didn't die in her skinny jeans. That's when Sara finds out their grandmother has a gift for talking to dead people, and two spritely spirits and a nasty soothsayer named Bartholomew are all working their angle with Toni's future caught in between.

Dear old Granny's determined not to be the last necromancer in the family, but with the death of her promiscuous granddaughter, her only option is Toni, who must remain a virgin until her eighteenth birthday without any ghostly interference from Sara.

Sara's not having any of it; especially since the guy Granny's conspiring with is the same guy that assisted in Sara's demise. Toni needs help! But protecting her sister is complicating all the ghostly fun on the other side!

Can death stop a twin? Maybe not, but Granny knows Dead Girls Never Shut Up.

Let the evil cackling commence!

Today Antoinette Maestro (Granny), the villain of Susan Stec’s novel,

is my guest.

1. What is your ultimate goal?
I'm a necromancer and my ultimate goal has always had the best interest of my granddaughters--front and center--to carry on the family gift of talking to the dead. Unfortunately, my younger grandchild was a casualty early on, so my only option was Toni, my daughter's oldest twin.

2. What makes you so driven to accomplish this goal?
Well, that's a simple question. When I die it will the end the family's legacy if Toni does not accept the gift of necromancy.

3. If you could choose anyone from the literary world as your partner in crime, who would you choose and why?
Why, Edgar Allen Poe, of course. The man knew the underworld, the value of my gift, and with his knowledge and assistance I could have stayed at my condo in Florida, and sipped sherry and watching the sun set on the Atlantic. Then again, with my ability to conjure ghosts, we would have made quite a team; Poe and I.

4. Describe yourself in three words or less.
Focused. Capable. Determined. (I really should add OLD)

From USA Today Bestselling Author Susan Stec,
I love laughing with my daughters, class B scary movies, fine cuisine and hamburgers from Wendy's. I'm addicted to electronics, dark chocolate, vintage eyeglass frames, warm socks, and would kill for a really good cup of cappuccino. I'm a wannabee gamer--Zelda is my fave, but I'll play Nintendo with my grandson for hours.
My favorite all-time television series are Twin Peaks and Dark Shadows. Best movies ever, 1943 A Christmas Carol and Soylent Green.
There isn't just one thing I'm passionate about. I'm married to a wonderful man, have two adult daughters, three grandsons, and three dogs. I live on fifty acres and hunt and fish. I will get up in the middle of the night to listen to the coyote sing, sit under a tin roof in the middle of a rain storm, stare at barren trees and revel in the white show surrounding them. I sew, do stained glass, paint watercolors, make jewelry, but most of all, I write. I write because I have to, and because it amuses me to live vicariously through my characters.

Something wicked this way comes! It’s villain month here on my blog. I’ll be interviewing two antagonists each week. Today Dixon, the villain of Celia Breslin’s novel DESTINY, is my guest.

Thanks for joining us, Dixon. Tell us…

What is your ultimate goal?

::Dixon grins, flashing fangs::  Well luv, if I told you that, I’d have to… kidding! Nothing gives me greater pleasure than tormenting The Warden, also known as Carina’s uncle Thomas. And what better way to annoy the wanker than to take away what he loves most in this world.  That would be Carina, of course. ::leans forward, silver eyes glowing:: I came close to owning her months ago. You know what they say: if at first you don’t succeed...

What makes you so driven to accomplish this goal?

::Dixon’s expression darkens and he growls::  Ancient, bloody history. The Warden will pay dearly for his crimes against my family.

If you could choose anyone from the literary world as your partner in crime, who would you choose and why?

I quite admire the vampire Lothaire’s handiwork.  He generates such carnage with style and flair. ::Dixon nods:: Yes, his power rivals my own. It would prove a good match.

Describe yourself in three words or less.

 Clever, powerful, driven.

Here’s more information about Dixon and the urban fantasy romance novel, Destiny:

In HAVEN, San Francisco nightclub owner Carina Tranquilli survives a vicious attack by her vampire family’s longtime archenemies. Several weeks later, as she struggles with PTSD and survivor’s guilt, supervillain Dixon resurfaces and kidnaps two of her best friends. To save them, Carina must comply with the evil bastard’s unusual demands. The kicker? She must tell no one what she is up to.

Meanwhile, she has a new dance club to open for the preternatural community, a fated soul mate acting secretive and distant, and a sexy, new, undead friend who’d love to take Alexander’s place in her heart and bed.

Blackmailed, betrayed, tempted…sometimes destiny has a wicked sense of humor.

A visit from Hannah Lokos's King Minos...

10/11/2014

Let the ominous plotting commence! It’s villain month here on my blog. I’ll be interviewing two antagonists each week. Today King Minos, the villain of Hannah Lokos’s novel, Labyrinth of Lies, is my guest.

So tell us King…

What is your ultimate goal?

Well, Audra, it’s simple really. I am king of Crete, and right now, in the Ancient world, I am the most powerful man in the Mediterranean. My palace is sprawling and lavish, and my naval fleet is the foremost and best. My name strikes terror into the heart of all who would defy me.  About twenty years ago, I ruthlessly defeated King Aegeus of Athens. I utterly broke him of his power, and to ensure that he remained crushed, I instituted a treaty of sorts. Every year, I force him to send fourteen of Athen’s youth here to Crete, to be locked inside my labyrinth, to be devoured by my monster. And from the outside, I look fearless, but beneath the surface, there lies something dark, something dreadful, something that could destroy me. For, twenty years ago, something else happened also, something that must lie locked away and forgotten. If the truth is exposed, I will lose everything, and I will not lose. I will do whatever it takes to make sure that my monster, my secret, survives.

What makes you so driven to accomplish this goal?

Let me ask you a question: if something was about to destroy you, what wouldn’t you do to make sure that it was never found?

If you could choose anyone from the literary world as your partner in crime, who would you choose and why?

Professor Moriarty, from Sherlock Holmes. If you combined our ruthless cunning, cruelty, and sheer brilliance, we would be an unstoppable force. Nothing in the ancient or modern world would be able to stand before our might.

Describe yourself in three words or less.

Devious, careful, and cruel.

Here’s more information about King Minos and the historical fiction novel, Labyrinth of Lies:

Something foul is afoot in Ancient Greece. Athens is bruised from a previous war with Crete. Worse still, King Minos annually demands fourteen Athenian youths to be fed to the Cretan Minotaur locked inside a maze. When his own beloved, Zosemine, is taken to be fed to the Minotaur, Theseus finds himself at the heart of a web of conflicting motives, with the sense that even those closest to him cannot be trusted.

Theseus must navigate the various plots, motives, and secrets through the labyrinth and see past the masks to slay the Minotaur.

A visit from Julie Eberhart Painter's Dorian

10/8/2014

Picture
Lock up your valuables! It’s villain month here on my blog. I’ll be interviewing two antagonists each week. Today Dorian, the villain of Julie Eberhart Painter’s novel, Kill Fee, is my guest.

Welcome to my blog, Dorian. Tell us…

1.    What is your ultimate goal?

Dorian, taps a cigarette from a crumpled pack and lights up. “To be rich, famous and loved,” she intones blowing a plume of smoke in my direction.

2.    What makes you so driven to accomplish this goal?

She scratches under her bun and thinks, “The usual, an unhappy childhood. I was never a pretty girl. Ms. Kern, my dear, dear friend, is more my style. But if I were her, I’d dress better. She has seven suits in her closet all the same color, dirty midnight. And, they don’t show off her figure. Yeah, I’d want to look like her—the sallow little twit.”

3.    If you could choose anyone from the literary world as your partner in crime, who would you choose and why?

Grinding her cigarette into an objet d’art, “Well it sure wouldn’t be another agent. I’m THE agent people should use. I’d choose publisher friend Morey. If nothing else, I like his earring, really. But seriously folks, I’d pick Robert Louis Stevenson’s Mr. Hyde. He had interesting drugs.” Laughs.

“Maybe he’d silence that talking Mynah bird of Penny’s. Bilgie lived among the barflies on the docks in a beach town. He’ll be the death of me yet.”

4.    Describe yourself in three words or less.

Opening another pack of smokes: “Ambitious, ambitious, ambitious.”

While the smoke clears around here, read on for more information about the cozy mystery, Kill Fee:

When Penny Olsen’s uncle is murdered during a bridge tournament, she inherits fifteen million dollars, servants and his moldy mausoleum, a ninety-eight-year-old beach house on an environmentally sensitive property.

But who, in this town of genteel seniors would kill this beloved man and the editor of EARTH-be-WARE Magazine? Perhaps the same person, or persons, who are after Penny. What secret do Penny and Cole share that bonds them together—and almost tears them apart?

A visit from D.A. Lampi's Bud Anderson...

10/5/2014

Picture
The Villain Visitations continue here on my blog! Today Bud Anderson, the villain of D.A. Lampi’s novel, Shadow Play, is my guest.

So, tell us Mr. Anderson, what is your ultimate goal?

My ultimate goal is to have Grace know how much I care. No, that's not true. My ultimate goal is to have Grace love me as much as I love her. She's a classy girl - the best thing that's happened to me since I got home from the service and my no-good wife left me. I'll do anything for Grace even if she is involved with someone else. One day she'll see how much I love her.

If you could choose anyone from the literary world as your partner in crime, who would you choose and why?

My ideal partner in solving crime wold be Lisbeth Salander from The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. She's no lady like Grace but she's smart and she's tough and I'd be able to count on her. She'd have my back. She brought down Martin Vanger, didn't she?

Describe yourself in three words or less.

The three words I'd use to describe myself are tough, observant, and tenacious.

Tenacious or obsessed? We‘ll let the readers decide! Here‘s more about D.A. Lampi’s mystery novel, Shadow Play:

Sometimes life seems like a madhouse. And sometimes it’s worse…

After her husband’s untimely death. psychiatrist Grace Rendeau forges a new life for herself and her two young children by moving to rural Minnesota. A prestigious position at the Rochester Forensic Center for the Criminally Insane offers her a new beginning while allowing her to spend more time with her children.

At the Center, Grace is immersed in a maelstrom of lives in disarray. She experiences the anguish and struggles of inmates who hope to regain a footing in sanity and face the devastating consequences of their criminal actions. In striving to heal her patients, Grace herself finds healing, a new strength, and a renew sense of hope for the future.

Among the possibilities is a budding romance with Alex Sawyer, a divorced doctor engaged in humanitarian work. Romance blossoms into love and Grace accompanies Alex on a medical mission to Indonesia. They return committed to a new life together.

But their joy is short lived. Grace returns home to an empty house—and a chilling kidnapper’s note. It asks for no ransom, makes no demands and holds out no hope for the return of her children. It is clearly an act of pure vengeance.

Suspects include a disgruntled security guard at the Center with a grudge against Grace; Alex’s bitter ex-wife; a recently escaped insane inmate. Enemies known and unknown haunt Grace’s every waking hour. Where are her children? What has happened to them? Who is attempting to destroy her? Will she find the answers in time to save her children, and retain her own last connection to sanity?

Grace’s riveting story illuminates the hopes and fears of every wife or husband, mother or father, woman or man, caught in life’s turmoil and striving to overcome it.

A visit from Pippa Jay's Professor Dark

10/1/2014

Picture
Let the evil cackling commence! October is Villain Visitation month here on my blog. I’ll be interviewing two antagonists each week. Today Professor Dark, the villain of Pippa Jay's novel, When Dark Falls, is my guest.

Thanks for joining us, Professor. Tell us….

What is your ultimate goal?

To utterly destroy Nocturnelle and drown the city of Nephopolis in eternal night!

What makes you so driven to accomplish this goal?

Nocturnelle is a nuisance. A rival. A spy for the other side and a traitor. I need the darkness. The sunlight hurts me. And before I can get rid of the sun, I have to get rid of Nocturnelle and her companions.

If you could choose anyone from the literary world as your partner in crime, who would you choose and why?

None of them. Prrrfft. They're all failures. Name me one who has ever achieved their goal. No, wait - all of them. They'd provide the perfect distraction.

Describe yourself in three words or less.

Three are insufficient. I'm a total genius! You expect me to sum myself up in three measly words? It’s an insult.

I see. Why don’t I provide a few more words about the superhero romance novel, When Dark Falls, then…

In a city where Dark Technologies Inc. now runs the show, Kadie Williams has more immediate concerns than the fall of Blaze, their guardian superhero. Almost every morning for the last few months she’s woken up with cuts and bruises on her body, and no idea how she got them. There are no nightmares. No evidence that she sleepwalks, or any sign of a break in. And nothing to tell her who’s been cleaning up after her. As just one of thousands of civilians conscripted to slave away in the labs of Professor Dark, she knew there'd be trouble ahead. But  she never expected it to be so bad, or so personal.

Desperate for answers, Kadie looks to the new defender of the night, the only person who can hinder the total domination of Professor Dark—Nocturnelle. The mysterious vigilante superhero came from nowhere with her cybernetic sidekick Shadow, set on putting an end to the brutality of Dark's regime. But as his laboratories work on a new secret super-weapon, Nocturnelle and Shadow may not be enough to save Nephopolis...or to save Kadie either.

When Dark Falls will be available from Breathless Press from November. To sign up for Pippa Jay’s newsletter, click here for an update on release, or check out her webpage here.
