Today I’m interviewing Ann Harvey, author of Timeout, released by Champagne Book Group October 2013.
Thanks for being here, Ann!
It's great to be here. I like your interview room. It's a pleasant blue.
What is your all time favorite crime novel, and why?
I always feel that being asked to name my favourite book of any genre is like being asked: "What has been your favourite breath?" As a chronic, incessant and addicted reader, I have enjoyed many crime novels. The best I can do is say that currently I am most enjoying Michael Connelly's Hieronymous "Harry" Bosch books. Characters are important to me and I feel Connelly draws Bosch well. Also, I like more extreme characters. A former tunnel rat serving in Vietnam, he has powerful memories which make him interesting.
Why do you write in this genre?
It's as simple as this: I have ideas for mystery situations and characters. In addition to Timeout, I have written a fictionalized history novel and another mystery. Currently I am plotting a mainstream novel.
Where did you get the idea for your latest novel?
I spent 30 years as a newspaper journalist, working as a reporter/photographer/editor for weekly, biweekly and small city daily newspapers in four provinces and one territory. This gave me the background for a mystery which is solved by a young newspaper reporter/photographer who is taking a timeout from working in a small town. The reporter's character and work environment is derived from the many such young women who were my colleagues as well as, of course, my own experience. I believe a writer observes people and then places them in situations to create stories.
Tell us about your latest novel in 25 words or less.
Iffy, a young reporter, wants to divorce her deadbeat husband without paying the alimony he demands. Her friends help her find a way. Quitting her job, drifting into bartered, unofficial investigation, she looks for a missing person, and finds a murder.
THIS or THAT?
Agatha Christie or James Patterson?
James Patterson
Monk or Kojak?
Monk. As a long-time slob, I have been working hard at becoming OCD about my home. Monk inspires me.
The Fugitive or The Firm?
The Firm. Covering court taught me to be deeply suspicious of lawyers. These novels show why.
Thriller or Mystery?
Mystery. I don't like suspense. Could be because I already have high blood pressure. Actually it is mainly because I like an intricate and well designed plot. Thrillers tend to smack you in the face with action.
